Surfing the seedy side… February 13, 2006
Posted by Dale in : How To, Internet Filtering, Internet Privacy, Security, Utilities , CommentsSo you’re surfed the seedy side of the ‘net and you want to remove the evidence.
This means you would have done at least the following with Internet Explorer:
- Delete Temporary Internet Files
- Clear History
- Delete your cookies.
Having done all that, you’re feeling safe from the prying eyes of your parents / significant other / IT guy.
WRONGGGGG!!!!!! Go to the back of the queue, and hang your head in shame.
You need to be aware that Internet Explorer records where you have been in an index.dat file.

What can you do about it?
Not much really.
1. Buy a commercial product, which can remove these index.dat files, or
2. If you have some DOS batch skills you can run a batch file on logoff which deletes the index.dat files.
Yes “files” is right, there can be more than one.
Option 2 is what I use.
Update: I posted an update to this post here.
On SharpReader:
Another way to look at SharpReader is that it’s like some newspapers where they have a “what’s inside” section. On that page, they’ll have a paragraph from each story. The Spencer Street Soviet does this in their print edition.
What is RSS? (answer: something which will save you time) February 12, 2006
Posted by Dale in : Blog Roll, Utilities , Comments
RSS is a family of XML file formats for web syndication used by news websites and weblogs.
They are used to provide items containing short descriptions of web content together with a link to the full version of the content.
This information is delivered as an XML file called RSS feed, webfeed, RSS stream, or RSS channel.
What do I use it for?
To save time, it used to take me two hours to scan assorted websites, and blogs. Now it takes me 15 minutes.
An example of this is say if I wanted to see if HillBilly Mansion had a new post. In the past, I’d surf to hillbillymansion.blogspot.com and have a look.
Now SharpReader does this for me automagically.
(the post in the screenshot is HillBilly Mom talking about HH’s New Pillow, and yes, it is more interesting than it sounds)
What “work use” do I use it for?
Well I review these feeds each day:
Microsoft Security Centre Response Blog
http://blogs.technet.com/msrc/rss.aspxSANS Internet Storm Centre
http://images.dshield.org/rssfeed.xmlAre there problems with it?
Yep, if the feed is broken, you need to visit the website manually *sigh*
On a positive note, only ever found one of those.
SecurityFocus Vulnerabilities (includes BugTraq)
http://www.securityfocus.com/rss/vulnerabilities.xml
You can get SharpReader here.
