How to connect your Android Phone to a PC.

(wrote this for a friend who has a HTC Desire HD)

  1. First connect your phone to your PC with this cable.
The small end plugs into your phone, where you’d normally plug the charger.
    Micro USB Cable
  2. Your phone will now display an icon like the one circled in RED (top left of picture):
    USB Notification Icon
  3. Swipe from the top-down to expand the notification box:

Press on the "Charge Only" and change it to Disk Drive
  4. Then click on “Done”.

  5. Shortly afterward, you should see a new drive on your computer.
(your photos will be in a folder called "DCIM")

Resetting the main account password on a Android phone (Froyo 2.2)

Account resetI stupidly reset the password on the Gmail account I use for Android phone sync-ing.  This broke Android phone sync.  The fix I came up with:

  1. Visit https://www.google.com/accounts/UnlockCaptcha?
  2. Enter the account name and password.
  3. Enter the Captcha

Now on the phone

  1. Sync the phone
  2. Enter the Captcha if prompted
  3. Enter the account password.
  4. Fixed!

Android and Microsoft Exchange

"android-rendered" graphic by Rich DellingerThe Android has some Microsoft Exchange support; how good it is depends on the vendor.

I was at a PDA software presentation the other day, and the vendor mentioned the problems of integrating the different Android handsets with their products.  I asked if it was because of the different operating system versions (Cupcake, Donut, Éclair) out in the market.

No, it’s because there are several different Exchange ActiveSync clients, some are better than others.  Another thing to note, if the Android handset has “Powered by Google” stamped on it, it means there is no Exchange ActiveSync client installed.  You have to go and download one.

If I owned an Android phone, I would buy the DataViz RoadSync application.  DataViz has been working in the handheld device market since 1984, and are a Microsoft Gold partner.  And they make the Documents To Go product, which I can recommend highly.
