How to open the Seagate FreeAgent Classic

This is the FreeAgent Classic.  My one is a 160GB external drive.

Step 1 – using a BLUNT object, such as a thin screwdriver, slide it along the front of the wedge.

Step 2 – Pry the case apart.

Step 3 – Lift the drive out of the case, it is just sitting in the case.

Step 4 – the USB to SATA controller is just attached by two screws.

And you are done!

The biggest surprise for me was that the drive was a SATA drive.

Again, thanks for the how to here. On my Free Agent Classic unit, I hear is also taged a Go Drive ?! Mine is a 250 GB and I was supprised and dissapointed to find it was an IDE/ATA and I was all set for it to be SATA….. bummer.Me thinks that they used whatever was on hand to make them up or perhaps the world changed in mid stream…who knows.
Really, most all of the mini-micro externals are plastic based. Best I have owned is the Maxtor One Touch lll Mini even if the sides pop out easily, Im 250 pounds and can stand
on 2 of them….very carefully. True, it was on the floor and I didnt see it.But 60 GB is too small nowdays. Theres nothing usefull inside one of them either, dont bother looking.

Yes, there is a version of the drive called the Go.

One of the best external drives I ever owned was a Maxtor One touch metal case drive.  Very durable.
